ADAPTASI ANTAR BUDAYA MAHASISWA PROGRAM AFIRMASI PAPUA DI PERANTAUAN

Studi Kasus: Komunikasi Antarbudaya Mahasiswa Program Afirmasi Pendidikan Tinggi bagi Putra-Putri Asal Papua di Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia Tesis berjudul “Adaptasi Antarbudaya Mahasiswa Program Afirmasi Papua di Perantauan” ini bertujuan mengetahui proses adaptasi antarbudaya mahasiswa Program Afirmasi Pendidikan Tinggi (ADik) bagi putra-putri asal Papua di Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). Pertanyaan penelitian ini adalah bagaimana proses seleksi Program ADik Papua di UPI?; Bagaimana komunikasi mahasiswa Program ADik Papua di UPI sebagai mahasiswa perantau dalam masyarakat Sunda?; Bagaimana pemanfaatan media dalam jaringan (daring) oleh mahasiswa Program ADik Papua di UPI?; Bagaimana transformasi budaya mahasiswa Program ADik Papua di UPI? Metode penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan tradisi studi kasus. Subjek penelitian adalah sembilan mahasiswa Program ADik Papua, penyelenggara program, dan masyarakat Sunda yang kerap berkomunikasi dengan mahasiswa Program ADik Papua. Objek penelitiannya adalah proses adaptasi antarbudaya mahasiswa Program ADik Papua di UPI. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam kepada sembilan mahasiswa Program ADik Papua, penyelenggara program, dan masyarakat Sunda yang kerap berkomunikasi dengan mahasiswa Program ADik Papua serta observasi.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tahapan seleksi Program ADik Papua kurang dilakukan maksimal, sehingga mahasiswa Program ADik Papua di UPI kurang siap menerima perbedaan di lingkungan baru. Seiring berjalannya waktu, mereka menyadari perbedaan fisik dan Budaya Papua dengan Sunda. Mereka mengalami gegar budaya dan berhasil mengatasinya namun kurang sempurna, Mereka menggunakan media daring, seperti media sosial sebagai rujukan berkomunikasi dengan masyarakat Sunda. Mereka dapat berkomunikasi dengan masyarakat Sunda karena sering berinteraksi dengan mereka. Simpulan penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Program ADik Papua di UPI dapat dikategorikan menjadi mampu dan kurang mampu beradaptasi antarbudaya.

CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION OF OVERSEAS STUDENTS OF PAPUA AFFIRMATION PROGRAM

Case Study: Cross-cultural Communication of Students of Higher Education Affirmation Program for young people of Papua Ethnic at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia

“Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Overseas Students of Papua Affirmation Program” aims to gain the coss-cultural communication and adaptation process of students of Higher Education Affirmation Program (ADik) for young people of Papua Ethnic at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). The research question posed is: How is the selection process of “ADik Papua Program” in UPI?; How is the communication of “ADik Papua Program” students in UPI as overseas student in Sundanese society?; How is the utilization of online media by “ADik Papua Program” students in UPI?; How is the cultural transformation of “ADik Papua Program” students in UPI?

This research method is qualitative with case study tradition. The subjects were nine of “ADik Papua Program” students, program organizers, and Sundanese society who often communicate with “ADik Papua Program” students. The object of the research is the cross-cultural adaptation process of “ADik Papua Program” students in UPI. The datas collection obtained through in-depth interviews to nine of “ADik Papua Program” students, program organizers, and Sundanese society who often communicate with “ADik Papua Program” students and observations.

The results showed that the selection stages of “ADik Papua Program” were not done maximally, so “ADik Papua Program” students in UPI were not ready to accept the differences in new environment. As time passed, they have realized of the physical and cultural differences between Papua and Sunda. They have experienced of cultural shock and successfully on that process but not perfectly, They use online media, such as social media as a reference to communicate with the Sundanese society. They can communicate with the Sundanese society because they often interact with them.

The conclusion of this research is “ADik Papua Program” Students in UPI can be categorized as able and unable in cross-cultural adaptation process.
